Most potential customers will never enter your showroom, but they may see your advertising, brochures or website. Great advertising photography will represent your company's image when you are not there to do so. Take your website as an example. When a buyer visits your site, and sees mediocre images, he immediately forms a negative opinion about your company. Bad quality images do not just affect the way your product is displayed, but everything from how professional you appear, the service level a customer can expect from you, your product accessibility, and even whether you are serious about doing business. Images that "will do for now" are bound to destroy your sales efforts. On the other hand, great commercial and product photography will bring out the best in your product, and create buyer confidence. Successful commercial and product photography incorporates many facets. Unwanted reflections need to be eliminated, colours need to be reproduced accurately etc. Say we are photographing products in studio: I will position items on a suitable background, either matt or gloss depending on the reflections you need. Next, I will remove stuck-on labels, clean the products, and arrange them meticulously. I will set up lighting with the required result in mind. After this, I will do the photography, ensuring the camera angle is ideal to bring out the best in the product. Next, images are downloaded to computer and processed using specialised software. Backgrounds are cleaned up, dust and lint removed, and images are processed according to your needs, and saved for print, web, or other applications. This process requires photographic and post processing skills which come with years of experience, and of course with a love of product photography. As a photographer, I enjoy product photography because I am very particular about lighting, colour balance, and all the finer details.
